    the passive approach

Passivhaus is the optimisation of a building’s thermal performance, based on building physics. With the help of the Excel based calculation program PHPP, designers are supported to find the optimal design and specification for a new building. The German Passivhaus Institute has formulated an energy performance standard for Passivhaus buildings as a target value.

The following graphic puts the passive approach and Passivhaus into the picture of sustainable buildings and renewable technology:

Passivhaus explained in 90 seconds

Please note that every dwelling needs some kind of heating, even if it is only a minimal backup heating, as in winter periods of no solar gains, the internal gains are not sufficient to make up for the losses through the fabric.
