MVHR Training in Co-Operation with Colleges

More and more colleges are setting up training facilities for renewable technologies. MVHR, as part of the fabric first approach should not be missing. Through its effect in reducing the heating load of dwellings, it makes heat pump technology viable in more cases.

We have equipped a number of colleges with training facilites:

  • Borders College – Hawick campus
  • Edinburgh College
  • West Lothian College
  • Langley College (London area)
  • Forth Valley College

We carry out training for trainers and offer ongoing student training within Langley College as part of the Green Skills Academy (Extended BPEC course on Domestic Ventilation)

Please let us know if you are interested in setting up a training facility or require training.

Domestic Ventilation Training

We have been pioneering training tradesmen on Domestic Ventilation since 2019. This came as a response to the major performance gaps in our industry, which we saw on a regular basis in our capacity as consultants and through studies carried out over the years. Well, what would you expect happens if an industry is allowed to evolve without any training. In the light of the new tougher building standards, this is even more of a critical issue, as more complex ventilation systems are being installed.

Border College

Border College

Starting with the Hawick Campus of Border College, we have installed MVHR training rigs in various colleges.

The Hawick Campus had been quite forward thinking in creating a Eco training house, incorporating Passive House principles,. Unfortunately their initial MVHR installation didn’t reflect a realistic scenario with commonly used materials. We replaced the system with an accessible one to the Passive House standard.

West Lothian College

Two MVHR rigs was installed in West Lothian College’s Skills Centre for Sustainable Living:

  • One Finished Installation with a standard UK MVHR
  • One Passive House MVHR installation, which can be assembled and disassembled

Edinburgh College

Edinburgh College

We also installed a training rig at Edinburgh College, showing the different types of ducting and a realistic MVHR set up to Passive House standard.

Langley College

We have been invited to deliver trainig at Langley College (near London) and train up their trainers to deliver an extended BPEC course.

Forth Valley College

As such, we are delighted that PAUL Heat Recovery was invited to co-operate with Forth Valley College, to deliver this vital part of industry training. I am personally really impressed by the college staff – the co-operation with them could not have been any better -and the facilities are great.

The candidates, which came from various trades background, enjoyed the BPEC course, which was extended by a day, so that more best practice methodologies and materials can be conveyed. As the college will create a bespoke training rig, the future Domestic ventilation courses will offer some unique hands-on training experiences, so that bit by bit the industry can upskill to be able to work to Passive House standards. No other training provider in the UK offers such training to this level of competency.

Future Aspirations for Training

Looking in the future, and I hope in the near future, we will be able to develop a more in-depth course to Passive standards with Forth Valley College, which I can only commend for their forward thinking. Such course would hopefully set the standard for training in Scotland and become a mandatory part of the curriculum for plumbing apprentices, as it has been for 15+ years now in many parts of Europe.

Harry Hunter, Training & Development Lead – Skills Transition Project, said:
“Delivering mechanical ventilation courses at Forth Valley College is essential to ensure construction professionals have the knowledge and confidence to provide safe, effective ventilation systems within the new passive house homes. The College are working with the Passive House trust and others to improve and develop courses for the future installers of mechanical ventilation. Stefan is very passionate about mechanical ventilation, and this showed as he encouraged the students in is group. We are lucky to have Stefan as one of the team.”
