Fuel poverty in Scotland
Extreme fuel poverty, costing more than a fifth of disposable income, affected 91,000 Scots households in tenement flats, or 16% of the total. Older homes have the most fuel poverty.
Retofitting these hard to heat homes with a radical fabric first approach will drastically help the situation for those tenants.
The energy-efficient rebuild of Warksburn Old Church has created one of the most efficient buildings in the UK. This heritage building from 1875 was sensitively updated a with cutting edge low carbon technology and is now generating more energy than it consumes every year. It is the first church conversion in the world to create a home which meets the ultra-demanding Passivhaus standard for energy efficiency.
107 Niddrie Road is a pre-1919 red sandstone tenement in Glasgow, consisting of eight one-bedroom flats. Southside Housing Association commissioned the retrofit of this building to the EnerPHit methodology, featuring ultra high levels of insulation and airtightness combined with new heating and MVHR.
