Making a Difference

Ellora Coupe is the founder of Her Retrofit Space, a community platform for professional women & homeowners transforming homes through retrofit. She won the Inspirational Business Woman in Construction Award 2025 and we agree that she deserves it.

Last year she visited us here in our office in Scotland. Despite health challenges in offices in the past, her experience was quite remarkable. Listen to her story.

“I suffer from severe degenerative respiratory issues, to such a degree that I was on the list for a lung transplant.

When we upgraded our house with a Passive House MVHR system with pollen filters, my health issues cleared up substantially and I don’t need my oxygen generator as I used to do. I was even taken off the lung transplant list.

My consultants were surprised to see such remarkable improvement. In the 20 years of seeing my lung condition they have never seen it as clear as it is now. Every one of them asked me what changes in my circumstances had taken place. When I told them about the installation of the MVHR system, they were amazed and said that someone should write a paper about the health benefits of MVHR systems.”

In 2011 Jane and her husband moved into a Passivhaus dwelling in Dormont Estate, Lockerbie. The estate, owned by Jamie Carruthers, a forward-thinking rural landlord, has PAUL focus and novus MVHR systems. “When I moved into the house I didn’t expect any relief from my constant battle with allergies. I have had to take medications constantly and have suffered from constant headaches most of my life. Within a couple of weeks I could breathe better through my nose and my constant sinus headaches disappeared. I thought it was my imagination until I went down to visit my children in Norfolk and I suffered terribly and couldn’t wait to come back to my safe house. As long as I keep the filters clean and do wet dusting I can live pain and symptom free.

Recently I didn’t have the system in operation for 3 weeks and my allergies went crazy. My sinus headaches returned and I was miserable. I would recommend anyone with allergies to use the [PAUL MVHR] system. Regards, Jane”

We love it when customers like Dan and Holly get excited about their building project (and about their ventilation system).
Most self-build projects take a bit longer and need the extra bit of support. We have accompanied Dan and Holly with help and project support from their initial design aspirations in 2017 to the time they moved in in 2020. Dan successfully installed the system himself and we commissioned it at the end. We helped with design changes, material supply and sorted all the logistical challenges due to their rural location.

Dan and Holly wrote to us at the end:
